Biden withdraws presidential bid, endorses Kamala Harris
KATHMANDU: The President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, has announced that he is withdrawing from the election race to become president again.
He has put forward Vice President Kamala Harris as the presidential candidate from the Democratic Party in his place.
US President Joe Biden has announced that he will drop out of the presidential race after a growing number of Democrats expressed concern about his viability in the election after a disastrous debate performance at the end of last month.
'Despite my candidacy for re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and country to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,' he said on social media X.
He said that he will give details about his decision at the end of this week.
In another post, he said, 'This year, I want to offer my full support and offer to Vice President Kamala Harris as the presidential candidate for the Democratic Party.' It's time for Democrats to unite and defeat Trump. Let's do it.'
Never before has a sitting US president or potential candidate dropped out of the race so late in the election process. Biden, who is currently 81 years old, issued a written statement on Sunday night saying that he has ended his plans to run for the presidency again for the sake of his party and the country.
He has also mentioned in the statement that he "takes the opportunity to work as the president as a great honor" and will complete his term which will last until January 2025.
Now there is a possibility that there will be competition for the American presidency between Vice President Harris from the Democratic Party and former American President Donald Trump from the Republican Party.
However, the Democratic Party's national convention in August is scheduled to select a presidential candidate.
He was criticized by the Democrats for his lackluster performance in the presidential election debate held on June 27.
Vice President Harris said he was honored to be nominated as the presidential candidate. He also said that he will "unite the country" against Trump.
