KATHMANDU: Today, World Press Freedom Day is being celebrated all over the world including Nepal. A conference of journalists held in the city of Windhoek, Namibia, organized by UNESCO, issued the 'Windhoek Manifesto for a Pluralist and Free Press'. Since 1993, the United Nations has decided to celebrate this day in memory of that.

With this decision of the United Nations, today is considered as an important day by the advocates of freedom of press and expression. Today, the importance of press freedom is being discussed around the world.In the 'Windhak Declaration for a Pluralist and Free Press' prepared with the participation of senior journalists, journalism professors and supporters of freedom, a strong commitment was made in favor of freedom of press and expression, and the conference clearly stood up for a free and pluralist press.

For this year, UNESCO has set the theme "Ensuring the rights of the future: freedom of expression as a conduit of human rights". This slogan has been decided with the feeling that only if the citizen can express himself, he will be able to exercise all kinds of human rights.

The media sector can play a role in promoting freedom of expression and encouraging citizens to express themselves. Therefore, the slogan set by UNESCO this year has appealed to the communication sector to work to make itself more active in order to take a step in the direction of the use of rights.
